What is Life Gone Vegan?

Welcome! I’m Perri, and I started Life Gone Vegan as a collection of original recipes, reviews, and tips for vegans and the gluten intolerant. I started eating this way when I realized that my steady diet of pizza and bagels was making me incredibly sick (actually, it was the dairy and gluten in the pizza and bagels that caused me problems, but I probably could have eaten more veggies anyway).

All recipes listed are vegan, meaning they do not contain meat, dairy, or eggs, and usually avoid ingredients with gluten, soy, corn, and refined sugar.

My Story

Switching to a vegan and gluten free diet was not something I had ever wanted to do, until I learned about my food allergies. My family and friends would constantly ask me questions like “are eggs vegan? why can’t you just have some butter? do you just eat tofu all day? and what the heck does gluten have to do with animal products?”, and they probably thought I was just hopping on the gluten free bandwagon because it was cool. But I explained that I had some food allergy-related health problems, and that cheese and I were going on a break (it was tough, but I got through it). It is sometimes tricky to balance my food choices with the other parts of my life, but it is possible with planning, prep time, and emergency protein bars that I always have on hand.

I did not start this diet all in one day. It took me about 8 months of trial and error to successfully cut out all of my problem foods, and I’m still working at it every day. Each time I dropped a new food, I had to revise the recipes that I had finally mastered and start all over again with new ingredients (this resulted in many batches of imploding muffins). Eliminating these foods in stages allowed me to better adjust to a new style of cooking, figure out quick recipes for busy days, and find dishes that travel or reheat easily. Not everyone’s vegan/gluten free diet is the same, especially since many vegans eat tofu and soy products, but I just ate what felt right for me. I do relapse very occasionally because I am human and I live in the pizza and bagel capital of the world.

Since going vegan, I’ve actually found a ton of new foods that I really love. I’m constantly scouring the internet for new ideas and it’s so much fun to come up with new recipes. Whether you eat vegan, gluten free, or are a non-vegan just looking for some healthier dishes, I hope you enjoy my recipes and find some inspiration to create your own. Please feel free to contact me with questions, comments, or recipe requests if you have them, and enjoy!
